Speech Encouragement Game

It’s very common that parents are concerned that their little one's speech isn’t where it should be. Although this worry can often be misplaced or earlier than needed, there are some fun ways to encourage speech through play. Learning through play at Toddletown Day Nursery Godalming is at the core of what we do!

This is one of many games you can play.

What you will need:

Toy animals, this can be adapted to other household items that you’d like to teach your child the name of.
Flash cards
A basket

Steps

Line the toys up on one side of the room/ garden
You sit on the other side with the empty basket
You show your child the first flash card and say the word loud and clear. They then must run to the other side of the room to find the toy that matches that card. You may want to have someone run with them the first couple times you play, so they understand how the game works.
They must run back with the item and pop it in the basket before coming to you for their next word.

It’s the speed and fun of running that makes this activity so enjoyable. Don’t be put off that the words don’t come quickly. Stick with it, playing word games, repeating the same words and they will come!
