Summer Activities
Looking for ideas to keep your younger ones entertained this summer? Here's a few suggestions from Toddletown Day Nursery in Farncombe...
Ice Paints
Even younger ones can have fun using these paints and will be curious about the colours and feel. The slightly older ones will not only enjoy using them but also making them. Do keep a watchful eye they don’t eat them, they do look very tempting, although I'm sure they wouldn’t taste nice. Old clothes are advisable for this activity too!
What you will need:
- Large thick paper (so water doesn’t seep through)#
- Tape
- Measuring spoons
- Ice pop sticks
- Non-toxic, washable paints.
Steps
- Put 1 tsp of paint into one of the cube spaces on your tray. Add 1 tsp of water to the same cube space and mix. Repeat this step in all the cube spaces, using different colours.
- Put an ice pop stick in to each cube space. It doesn’t matter if they are not standing up right.
- Place the tray carefully in your freezer until frozen.
- Remove ice paints from the tray. It may be easier/ less messy if you place them in paint pots/ tray or an old plastic plate.
- Find a shady spot outside and tape your thick paper to the ground. Let your little one start their piece of art. They may be side tracked by the beautiful melting ice so as always give them a little demo and I'm sure they will love getting creative with their ice paints.
Boat Making
Children love making things but there's always something extra special for them when they get to make something that doubles up as a fun toy.
What you will need:
- A new sponge
- Lollipop stick
- Thick paper
- Scissors
Steps
- Draw a big triangle shape on the paper and cut it out.
- Cut a tiny hole at the centre of the top and bottom of the triangle. Push your lollipop stick through both holes.
- Cut a very small slit in the top centre of your sponge just big enough to pop the end of your lollipop stick in snuggly, once your stick is in place your boat is done.
You can fill up a tuff try or large bowl in the garden to play with your new boat or use it in your bath. You can also have races where all participants must try to blow their boat to the end of the bowl before anyone else.
Food Water Sensory
It's always nice to bring a little sensory play into the garden for the smaller ones so why not try this one outdoors in a shady spot on a warm day. This activity is brilliant for children's hand and eye co-ordination.
What you will need:
- Clean large bowl or dish with water
- Age appropriate fruit and veg cut to appropriate sizing for your little one. Cucumber, berries etc.
- A towel for drying after
- A picnic blanket or something similar to sit on outside.
Steps
- Spread the fruit or veg throughout the bowl.
- Place on the blanket in front of your little one and watch their curiosity take over.
You can talk about the different colours, textures, as they try and grab different sixed pieces and then of course talk about the taste (if safe to do so for your child's age).
Be sure to stay with your little one throughout the activity and always make sure food is prepared safely.
