Karen wrote recently about sensory activities, and this example shows a great way to combine sensory play with maths exploration for toddlers. Pasta is a great sensory activity for toddlers and preschoolers to explore with their sense, touch and sound.
Older children can use this activity as an opportunity to learn mathematical language such as “empty, full, more, less”. You could ask your toddler or preschooler to put the "same" amount in each tray, or give Daddy "two more" than them.
They also learn the process of cooking when the pasta is dry before it is cooked!
This simple activity covers many areas of learning. A dry pasta sorter is a great activity for improving fine motor skills, it covers three areas of learning and development in the EYFS: Personal Social Emotional, Understanding the World and Mathematics.
You could add extra fun and learning by using coloured pasta, pasta shapes or even using cooked pasta to talk about the different textures!
I hope you and your little ones enjoy this as much as we did!
